Samsung announces the Galaxy A53, the successor to one of its best selling phones

The Galaxy A52s was one of Samsung’s top selling phones for 2021. The mid-range device packed a lot of features despite its relatively low price, including 5G connectivity.
With the new Galaxy A53, Samsung are sticking with their winning formula, with a near identical design and modest upgrade to specs.
Although the US release will see a price reduction, the price in the UK will remain the same at £399. However, this is £20 cheaper than its closest competitor, the Apple iPhone SE (2022), which actually saw a price increase from the predecessor.

The display appears identical, with a 6.5 inch Super AMOLED panel, with 120 Hz refresh rate and 1080 x 2400 resolution. The bezels are also the same, with a small circle cutout at the top for the selfie camera.
The biggest change is the switch to Samsung’s own proprietary chip. The Galaxy A52s used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G, whereas the Galaxy A53 will be using the Samsung Exynos 1280. However, according to the latest Geekbench scores, the new chip appears to be significantly slower for multi-core performance, averaging around 1800, compared to 2500 with the Galaxy A52s. On the other hand, single-core performance appears the same, averaging around 700 for both devices. Although the drop in benchmark scores is disappointing, actual real world performance differences should be less noticeable.
As for memory, Samsung will no longer be offering a 4GB model, with the minimum starting at 6GB with 128GB internal storage. There will also be two 256GB models, coming with either 6GB RAM or 8GB RAM.

The cameras will remain the same quad array, featuring a 64 MP wide f/1.8 camera, 12 MP ultrawide f/2.2 camera, 5 MP macro f/2.4 camera and 5 MP depth f/2.4 camera. The selfie camera is also unchanged, with a 32 MP wide f/2.2 camera.
The battery will be bumped by 10%, from 4500mAh to 5000mAh, which Samsung claims can deliver 2 days of battery life. Charging speeds will remain at 25W, and there’s still no wireless charging.
The Samsung Galaxy A53 will come in 4 colours:
- Awesome Black
- Awesome White
- Awesome Blue
- Awesome Peach
