Lyca Mobile now supports 4G calling and WiFi calling with all plans (UPDATED)
DECEMBER 2024 UPDATE: It appears Lyca have removed references to WiFi and 4G calling on their website. In addition, we received an email from a visitor who said they called Lyca support and were told they do not support WiFi or 4G calling. As of now, spusu is the only other budget network powered by EE who support WiFi and 4G calling.
Lyca Mobile have rolled out 4G calling and WiFi calling. The free service is available with all plans, including pay as you go.
EE, who power Lyca, have supported 4G calling since the launch of its 4G network on 30th October 2012, followed by support for WiFi calling on 10th April 2015.
Lyca used to be powered by O2, up until June 2023. O2 have supported 4G and WiFi calling since March 2017.
It’s therefore unclear as to why it has taken so long for Lyca to support 4G and WiFi calling. Many MVNOs, including newer and smaller providers, have supported the two technologies for several years, some of which are powered by EE and O2.
4G calling, sometimes referred to as VoLTE (Voice over LTE), allows users to make voice calls with a 4G signal. In theory, the technology enables higher quality voice calls and increased reliability when compared to 2G.
Similarly, WiFi calling offers the same benefits, but uses WiFi instead of a 4G signal. However, users must be connected to a WiFi network beforehand to use WiFi calling.
Both technologies are seamless - they can switch between each other, as well as to a traditional 2G signal, without disconnection or disruption. They are also automatic, in the sense that you don’t need to set it up on your phone or make a special phone call. Most smartphones support the technology, and it should be enabled by default the settings for Android and iPhone.
Lyca Mobile have experienced a revamp of leadership roles in the past year, with changes to the CEO and senior management positions. The transition in positions could shed light on the strategic decisions leading to the implementation of these technologies, with the new leadership hoping to impress and leave their mark. It's therefore likely we will see more features and changes to Lyca throughout 2024, as Lyca continues to battle it out against its competitors, including Lebara and SMARTY.
